Answers to frequently asked questions

PEDeus AG (hereafter "PEDeus") was founded in summer of 2018 as a subsidiary of the University Children's Hospital Zurich. PEDeus pursues the goal of making medication safer for children through innovative medical devices. Read more

The proximity to the University Children's Hospital Zurich is important to PEDeus. However, regulatory requirements for the certification of PEDeus' medical device require the independent form as a public limited company. This form also allows the company to be more responsive in the eHealth market.

PEDeDose is an innovative tool from PEDeus AG. The PEDeDose Software is certified as a medical device Class IIa. As a web-based tool, it actively supports healthcare professionals in deciding on drug dosages for children and thus ensures the safe and efficient prescription of pharmaceuticals. PEDeDose enables the patient-specific calculation of dosages and the software is therefore classified as a medical device (Class IIa). It serves a medical purpose and contributes directly to the well-being of patients. As a medical device, PEDeDose software must comply with the specific legal requirements.

Medical devices are categorised into risk classes based on the intended purpose of the products. According to the revised Medical Devices Regulation the PEDeDose software is certified as a Class IIa medical device. For this purpose the PEDeDose software has gone through a conformity assessment procedure. PEDeus subsequently recieved the MDR certification for Class IIa medical devices in December 2020. PEDeus also achieved the ISO 13485:2016 certification as a medical device manufacturer in March 2020.

PEDeDose contains all the important substances (330 substances as of Dec. 2022) used in children's clinics, with the exception of cytostatics and HIV drugs.

The data on the substances contained in PEDeDose are based on the harmonised drug dosages of SwissPedDose, on clinical studies and on the experience of the University Children's Hospital Zurich. They are entered and updated (as required, at least every 5 years) by experienced pharmacists. Every adjustment in the database is checked according to the 6-eyes principle, historicised and thus remains traceable.

The quality of our dosage data has the highest priority for us. For this reason, adaptations and supplements are carried out by our experienced pharmacists and checked according to the 6-eyes principle. Are you missing an active ingredient or an indication? Do you prefer a different dosage? Contact us and we will carefully examine your request.

PEDeus strives to cooperate with all children's hospitals. This is decisive: on the one hand, to ensure that PEDeDose can be used in everyday clinical practice and on the other hand, because the high quality dosage data in PEDeDose is also based on the many years of university experience of children's hospitals with pediatric drugs.

The SwissPedDose association, which is supported by the eight major children's clinics in Switzerland, develops nationally harmonised dosage recommendations for drugs used for children and makes them available to medical professionals in a directory. PEDeDose, formerly kinderdosierungen.ch, starts here, includes the dosage recommendations from SwissPedDose, but contains also many more active ingredients and goes one step further in its implementation: With the help of a tool, it actively supports healthcare professionals in calculating dosages, a complex and hitherto error-prone activity.

Since drug doses for children are often not included in the product information for healthcare professionals, there is frequently no standard for the use of drugs in children. SwissPedDose fills a big gap here. Thanks to the national harmonisation of dosage recommendations for the benefit of young patients, the safety of drugs for children can be increased. Various studies show, however, that neither a database of pediatric dosages (as offered by SwissPedDose) nor electronic prescription alone is sufficient to avoid errors in the prescription process. Until now, there has been no algorithm that supports healthcare professionals in defining the individual dosage. With PEDeDose, we are therefore taking this step consistently and, in addition to the dosage database, we offer the possibility of having the individual dosage calculated automatically and reliably on the basis of child data. Furthermore, PEDeDose automatically checks the patient data (such as height, weight or age) for plausibility and notifies the healthcare professional if they deviate significantly from the growth curves.

PEDeDose is particularly innovative: on the one hand because of the calculator and the automated checking of patient data for plausibility and on the other hand because it can be directly integrated into primary systems (clinical information systems, doctor's practice and pharmacy software) via web service.

There is no product known to us on the international health care market that contains the same functionalities while still fully complying with legal requirements.
